The art of the stack: rings and bracelets
Stacking is how many of us build a jewellery collection: one meaningful piece at a time. Here is how to make a stack look deliberate, and how to stop pieces wearing against each other.
Ring stacks
Start with an anchor
Every stack needs a hero, such as an engagement ring, a signet or a bold sculptural band. Build around it with slimmer pieces on either side.
Vary width and texture
Combine a polished band, a pavé band and something textured, such as twisted, beaded or hammered. Three to four rings on one finger is the most that stays comfortable.
Spread it out
Midi rings and rings on the index finger balance a stacked ring finger. Leaving one finger bare between stacks gives the hand some breathing space.

Bracelet stacks
- The formula: one rigid bangle, one chain, one piece with stones.
- Watch wearers: stack on the opposite wrist, or keep bracelets slimmer than the watch case.
- Odd numbers (three or five) tend to look more natural.
Protect your stack
Stacked pieces rub against each other all day. Diamond pavé will gradually wear a softer gold band, and two hard pieces will scuff each other. To keep wear even:
- Put a plain spacer band between two stone-set rings.
- Match carats where possible, as softer 22ct wears faster against 9ct.
- Take stacks off for the gym and housework.
- Clean them as a set, as dirt builds up between rings.
