Recycled gold: the quiet revolution in fine jewellery

Almost all the gold ever mined is still in circulation, in bars, coins, electronics and jewellery boxes. Because gold can be melted and refined indefinitely without losing quality, recycling is one of the most effective ways to reduce the footprint of fine jewellery.

Is recycled gold as good as new?

Yes. Once refined, recycled gold is chemically identical to newly mined gold. A 750 hallmark means 75% pure gold whatever its source. There is no difference in colour, strength or value.

Why it matters

  • Mining moves large amounts of earth and uses chemicals such as cyanide and mercury.
  • Refining existing gold needs a fraction of the energy and water.
  • Recycling reduces pressure on regions where mining funds conflict or relies on unsafe labour.

What to look for

Look for jewellers who state what proportion of their gold is recycled and who work with refiners certified to recognised responsible-sourcing standards. For newly mined gold, traceable programmes such as Fairmined support small-scale miners who meet strict environmental and labour standards. Give old pieces a new life

Broken chains, single earrings and rings that no longer fit can become something you will wear again. Remodelling keeps sentimental gold in the family. Many people combine a grandmother’s ring and a parent’s chain into one new piece.

Thinking of remodelling? Bring your pieces to our Hatton Garden studio for a free assessment. We will test the gold and discuss designs with you, with no obligation.
