How to find your ring size at home
A ring that fits well is comfortable enough to forget about and secure enough that it never slides off in cold water. Here is how to find your UK ring size at home in five minutes, using things you already have.
Before you measure
Fingers change size through the day. They are smallest first thing in the morning and in the cold, and largest in the evening, after exercise or on a warm day. For the most accurate result, measure at the end of the day at room temperature, and measure two or three times.
- Measure the exact finger, and the hand, you plan to wear the ring on. Most people’s dominant hand is slightly larger.
- If your knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size between them, so the ring slides over the knuckle but does not spin.
- Wide bands (6 mm and above) fit more snugly. Go up half a size.
Method 1: Measure a ring you already own
This is the most accurate home method. Take a ring that fits the intended finger well and measure its inside diameter edge to edge with a ruler marked in millimetres. Find the nearest diameter in the chart below, or enter it in the calculator.
Method 2: The paper strip
- Cut a strip of paper about 1 cm wide and 10 cm long. Paper does not stretch the way string does.
- Wrap it around the base of your finger so it is snug but can still slide over the knuckle.
- Mark where the paper overlaps with a fine pen.
- Lay it flat and measure from the end to your mark in millimetres. That is your circumference.
Method 3: Visit us in Hatton Garden
For an engagement ring or a wide wedding band, nothing beats a professional sizing with a set of metal ring gauges. Book a free fitting through our contact page. It takes less than ten minutes.

Buying a ring as a surprise?
Borrow a ring your partner wears on the right finger and press it gently into a bar of soap to make an impression, or trace the inside onto paper. Bring the soap or tracing to us and we can work out the size. Most of our rings can be resized by up to two sizes after purchase, and many by more.
